Category: Miscadmin @ 10:42 pm

Bo Zhang, New York Fashion and Beauty Photographer (www.boandbro.com) will be visiting the Carriage House to conduct a fashion workshop. The subject of the workshop and lighting techniques will be of interest to both studio lighting and strobist photographers. The model Bo has selected for this workshop is Oriana (www.wix.com/olayendecker/model), who has worked with many of the top DC fashion photographers (Tim Colburn, Tony Veloz, and others…)

Unlike other workshops where there is a lot of shooting and not much teaching, this workshop is aimed to give much more detail photoshoot workflow process. Go through with Bo the thought process behind planning a shot and the technical aspects of executing a shot. The workshop will be limited to 10 photographers to ensure plenty of direct involvement with Bo.

The workshop (2 pm to 7 pm) will cover a beauty look and a fashion look. In the first part, Bo will cover what to look for when searching a model, a MUA, a hair stylist. Then Bo will go through the process behind each look and what to look for in the final beauty or fashion photo. You will learn how to interact with a model and what directions to give.

Each photographer will have the opportunity to take photos of each look. In the second part of the workshop, the photos will be uploaded to the computer and a group feedback and critique session will start for the best pics from each photographer. Feedback will include, but not be limited to details to look for when choosing the final photo, and what to look out for in post processing each specific photograph.

(Please note, this is not a lighting workshop or a workshop to get dozens of images for your portfolio. This a a workshop to teach you the subtle details to get your photo to the next level!)

Dance Photography – Winter Workshop Series!

Category: Miscadmin @ 11:01 am

Photo by Karlo BarberWe are happy to announce that the Carriage House will be hosting a series of Dance Photography Workshops during the Winter of 2010/2011!

Following the well received workshops with Kelly Mayfield and Stormy Budwig in August, we will now continue with our next workshop on December 5th. Our feature model will be Viktoria, an Austrian professional ballet dancer, trained at the Europa Ballettkonservatorium St. Pölten, whose performances include Don Quixote, Esmeralda, Tschaikovsky Pas des Deux,Paquita, and Le corsaire Pas de Deux…

Viktoria, who currently lives in New York, will be visiting the Carriage House for two workshops on December 5th:

Session A) Developing a Dance Photography Portfolio (2:00 – 6:00 pm)

In one afternoon, you will create, or expand your dance portfolio with two wonderful dancers as models!

Introduction: 2 pm – 3 pm – Presentation of examples of great dance photography. Discussion by dancers about their perspective on challenges of dance photography, expectations and physical demands. Technical aspects and challenges of dance photography, including motion/in flight/lighting and posing.

Photo Shoot: 3 pm – 6 pm Will consist of a series of Mini Photo Shoots including floor movement, in flight and pre/post performance portraits. Each photographer has had the opportunity to direct and shoot the dancers on different sets. The other photographers will also be shooting at this time, but not directing. The model who is not dancing, will be in a separate area of the studio posing with continuous (hot) lights.

Workshop Fee: $80 plus $15 for each model release.

Session B)  The Female Nude: Study of a Dancer (7:00 pm to 10:00pm)

The workshop will be an exploration of the physical strength and unique build of a professional dancer. Some examples of this genre are “The Dancer” by Robert Mapplethorpe, and the book “Airborne” by Lois Greenfield.

Our model for the workshop will be Viktoria,  who has experience as an art nude model in Europe.   This is a great opportunity to add an exceptional model to your portfolio!

The workshop is intended for advanced photographers who are familiar with studio lighting and working with figurative/nude models. The structure of the workshop will allow each photographer to meet and direct the model in a “mini-shoot” of 30 minutes. At the end of each “mini-shoot” the other photographers are invited to briefly capture images of the model/lighting/concept. Photographers will take turns “directing” the model, and as a result, have the opportunity to shoot 6 different scenes with the model.

(Photographers who have not worked with studio lighting but are interested in attending this workshop can take the Basic Lighting Workshop offered at the Carriage House this Tue. Nov. 30th from 7 to 10.)

Session Limit: 6 photographers

Workshop Fee: $95 plus Model Release $15

Photo by Anh TranFotoWeek 2010 – During 2010 we initiated a monthly photography exhibit featuring work by local photographers in a) street / urban photography,  b) fashion / beauty photography  and   3) fine art nude/figurative photography.  The best work of selected by jurors was featured with 30 photographs by 15 photographers during our FotoWeek Open House on November 12th, 2010.  We had a great turnout and it was another milestone in the development of the Carriage House as a venue for photography in the Washington D.C.  All of the images were reproduced by our printer techs, Ashleigh and Sher, on our Epson 9900 printer, at 30” by 30” size, or larger.

Our first publication! We are now producing a 2010 Carriage House Photography Catalog with the 30 photographs representing the “Best of the Year.”  We hope this catalog will contribute to a greater awareness and recognition of local photographers, and result in their work being exhibited and displayed in an increasing number of coffee shops, restaurants, shops and other venues in Washington DC and the surrounding area.  All of the work reproduced in the Catalog will be available for display by contacting the artist through their respective website. If you are interested in receiving a copy of the Catalog, please send us an email.
